A postdoctoral position in “Tissue Engineering and Biomechanical characterization” will be available in the Center for Life Nanoscience  at IIT (CLNS@SAPIENZA, Rome, Italy).

The project will explore:
  • Preparation of 3 dimensional bio-structure obtained from skeletal muscle primary cultures without the use of any artificial scaffold;
  • Preparation and in vitro morpho-functional characterization of co-culture systems between myogenic and neuronal cells, both in 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional systems;
  • Contactless measurement of muscular tissue contraction by a high-resolution and a high-speed “Digital Image Correlation” system on 3D co-culture;
  • Morphological and functional characterization of neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) in both 2 and 3 dimensional systems.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with an educational background in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with an emphasis on Biomechanics.
Successful candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in Cell Biology and/or Morphogenesis and/or Biotechnology and five-year post-lauream experience in tissue culturing, tissue characterization and, in particular, analysis of biomechanical properties of engineered muscle tissue.
Ideal candidates should have produced at least 1 publication in peer-reviewed journals, preferably as first authors, in one of the following areas: muscle tissue ex-vivo engineering, muscle tissue ex-vivo characterization.

They should also have specific experience in:
  • manipulation of mouse animal models;
  • preparation of tridimensional skeletal muscle cell culture systems;
  • preparation of muscle-nerve co-cultures (2D and 3D);
  • analysis of gene and protein expression;
  • measurements of biomechanical and functional properties of 3 dimensional muscle-nerve co-culture systems;
  • measurement of 3D skeletal muscle tissue strain by a high resolution and a high speed “Digital Image Correlation” system.
A good knowledge of English is essential.

School attendance, participation in international conferences, Conference proceedings and oral contributes are considered a plus.

An internationally competitive salary dependent on experience will be offered.
